Lap Steel

I am learning how to play the lap steel. I decided to learn in the C6 tuning which is used both in traditional Hawaiian music and also classic country styles such as Hank Williams. The 6th degree of the C chord (an A) seems to be the magic (echo magic?) element in the sound of the instrument. Its also hard to control, because it is tempting to put that note in everything which makes everything sound vaguely jazzy or Hawaiian, which is a good or bad thing depending on how you look at things. I am taking lessons from someone names Bob Hofner who lives in Red Hook, a Brooklyn neighborhood that my apartment is near. More on Redhook later, I am kind of fascinated with the neighborhood, as it is a raw, broken down old shipyard neighborhood which has yet to be fully exploited.
